WTAE's Holiday Shopping Guide: Toy Safety, Best TVs, Gift Cards

WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Bob Mayo said those were the toy-related questions in the annual watchdog report by PennPIRG (Pennsylvania Public Interest Research Group).

Hot Wheels Rev Up Car is one of the toys mentioned in PennPIRG's 2007 toy survey, "Trouble In Toyland." A warning on the toy says "small parts may be generated."

"There are little rubber wheels that have been found to come off very easily. They can fit inside the choke tube or a child's throat very easily, and therefore definitely warrant a choking hazard," said PennPIRG's James Browning.

The PennPIRG report also talks about toys with small, powerful magnets that can pose dangers.

"Some of these magnets are so powerful on these small toys that they can stick together across the walls of the intestines and cause serious bleeding, hospitalization, very bad complications," said Browning.

Lafayette: (Under) Mining Goodwill

ANZ and the banks that had supported Lafayette should show the communities of Rapu Rapu who will live with the consequences of the failed investment what "corporate social responsibility" means in practice. They can demonstrate this by ensuring that sufficient funds are set aside for the environmental rehabilitation of the mine and a sustainable development program for the communities of Rapu Rapu.

There is much to be gleaned from the Lafayette experience. The fundamental lesson for Australian mining companies operating in developing countries, as well as their financiers, is that mining projects that do not have and retain community approval ought not be pursued or financed.

For the Australian mining industry and government, the case demonstrates that an official complaints mechanism should be established within Australia to inquire into community dissatisfaction abroad.

Old hand to steer IBM's operations in N.C.

Bob Greenberg is serious and somewhat guarded. In other words, he personifies IBM.Who better then to lead the global technology company's largest operations center in the world? He also will assume the role of chief government and community liaison, the public face of the company across North Carolina.Overseeing operations at RTP is a dynamic opportunity, Greenberg said, because the site represents the full scope of the company, including sales, marketing, research and product development."Some of the most interesting roles at IBM are ones where you get an up-close and personal view of what our clients' needs are," he said during a recent interview in a multimedia showroom of IBM servers.

Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

For thousands of visitors, going to Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend was much easier and more pleasant than heading home. The new $60 million flyover, which erased the hated rotary at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, smoothed Cape-bound travel on Friday and Saturday. But drivers returning from the Cape Monday found themselves in a worse-than-usual traffic nightmare, with backups that stretched as far as 17 miles to Yarmouth at midafternoon.

To avoid a repeat this summer, state transportation officials said yesterday they plan to install electronic signs urging vacationers to stagger their departure from the Cape as well as their arrival. Officials said they will also look at possible changes to the roadways around Exit 1, where Route 6A merges into Route 6 at the base of the bridge.
