Startup plans floating data centres

A STARTUP is planning to build floating data centres on knackered cargo ships.

San Francisco Bay Area company International Data Security (IDS) envisions it will have up to 50 decommissioned container ships housing data server farms, moored in various ports around the world including 22 in North American cities.

IDS believes using cargo ships will give it flexibility and enable expansion limited only by the availability of ships and port space instead of real estate constraints.

Its first location will be available at Pier 50 in San Francisco starting in April and it already has, ahem, anchor tenants signed, a source close to the company said.

Shipboard cargo spaces will be built out as data center floors and deck space will be used to stack modular data centers in standard shipping containers.

TARGUSinfo adds VoiceStar, Leading Provider of Pay-Per-Phone-Call ...

VIENNA, Va., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- TARGUSinfo today announced that VoiceStar has selected On-Demand Identification(SM) services from TARGUSinfo to help maximize the impact of VoiceStar's pay-per-phone-call marketing programs.

Pay-per-phone-call is a fast-growing online advertising method based on the same principles as pay-per-click. Instead of paying for Web visits, however, advertisers pay for phone calls triggered by their online advertisements. Pay-per-phone-call is increasingly popular among local service companies that don't have an e-commerce Web site or any Web site at all.

VoiceStar, a Philadelphia-based pay-per-phone-call leader, is using TARGUSinfo services to enhance call-reporting data with consumer contact information. As a result, agents receive a verified name for each consumer inquiry before the call is connected.

Unversity Place litigation settled

It turned out to be a torn ACL, requiring major surgery, which has had me in pain and on and off crutches all session. At one point I developed an overuse injury in my right hand from using crutches.

Meanwhile, various powerful politicians, including at one time the entire House GOP leadership, stopped speaking to me because of a misunderstanding over a post on this blog. Others stopped speaking to me for other reasons; some Ive had professional working relationships with for years now snap at me and walk away when I ask a question. The Idaho Supreme Court ruled 3-2 against me in the lawsuit challenging closed meetings of legislative committees that was filed by the Idaho Press Club, of which Im president.

I misstated a budget figure by hundreds of millions of dollars and had to write my first published correction in years.

City out to learn what's in CSX cars

The derailment of a CSX freight train carrying hazardous materials through Baltimore has again pushed to the forefront concerns about whether city officials know what dangerous cargo is passing through each day.

Though last weekend's accident, in which 12 train cars fell off the tracks near M&T Bank Stadium, left no injuries or leaks, city officials say they intend to press CSX Transportation Inc. for real-time information on what chemicals are coming in and out of Baltimore - information to which the city does not now have regular access.

Mayor Sheila Dixon held a security Cabinet meeting yesterday with police, fire, health and transportation representatives to discuss requesting such information immediately.

Sony Deal Solidifies Amazon's Challenge to Apple

Analyst Tim Bajarin emphasized that the Sony-Amazon MP3 deal doesn't mean a similar deal with Apple won't be forthcoming. "We don't know that [Sony has] not gone with Apple," as well as Amazon, he said. "We'll have to wait to see... There's no question that for the labels to walk away from Apple is ridiculous." .

Dell cribs services playbook from larger rivals

Dell is beginning to sound a lot like IBM, HP, EDS or any other technology services provider. The big question is whether it'll succeed at running infrastructure for customers.

One of the big takeaways from Dell's conference call Thursday evening–aside from the lack of guidance, slight hostility from analysts and shakiness of the presentation in some areas–is that the PC giant wants to go become more of a services provider. The message: We're Dell, we can simplify your architecture and run it for you. Consultants need not apply. The big picture: Dell wants to sell more software and services so it can offset its low-margin foray into the retail channel and improve the earnings outlook.

For a while, Dell's Stephen Schuckenbrock, president of global services and chief information officer, sounded like he was back at EDS.
